Tenby Boxing Club has risen from the ashes after four years of being inactive. New coaches Jason Cheal, Darren Haines, with advice from Digger Haines, ex national and Commonwealth Games coach, have opened a new gym at Unit 2, Wallfield Lane, Tenby. With the help of local sponsors, they have opened the new gym, leasing it from Pembrokeshire Engineering. "We have had a fantastic response from people wanting to box and quite a few of our old boxers have returned to do battle for Tenby's pride again," said Digger. "Letters have gone out to local companies asking for help with our running costs and to buy new equipment. We have started with nothing and need the help of sponsors to gather equipment to make a success of the club. "Wouldn't it be nice to have a local lad represent Wales again," added Digger. "When I retired some years ago, we had several Welsh champions and a British champion in the gym, so we know what it takes to make Tenby a top gym. We will do it again, of that I'm sure. All we need is the help of Pembrokeshire people to assist us in our hour of need. "We have 38 members already and have only been running for two weeks; their ages range from 8 to 60." Being a founder member of Whitland ABC, Digger said they havd helped with donations of some gloves and kit, and many thanks go to Kim for his help. Cardigan ABC have donated a boxing ring, and again many thanks go to them. Other sponsors so far are: Stacey Haines, £100; Chris and Lez, The Cross Inn, Penally, £50; Damian Brown, The Prince of Wales, £50; Chick Brown, The Woodlands Hotel, £50; Bret, The Sun Inn, Tenby, £30; Mike from Mike's Posh Wash, £30; Paul, First Call Security, £50; Will Gardner, The Jazz, £20; Dai Pinhead from D&O Williams Builders, £20; Paul from Scaffold 2000, framing for hanging bags; Wayne John, Manorbier Mowers, £30; Eric and Lesley, Tenby House, £100; Jakie James, The Stables Caravan Park, Tavernspite, £100; Steve Griffiths, Total Security, £100; Leigh and Michael Williams from the Monkstone, £100; Spa Stores and Garage, Pentlepoir, £150; Jamie and Lisa, Focused Recruitment, Hengoed, £25; Talbot Timbers, Tenby, a bundle of batten.
