Budding young Joe Calzaghe's in the Tenby area now have the chance to find out whether they can 'float like a butterfly or sting like a bee', as new boxing gym facilities have recently been introduced in the town.
Tenby Boxing Club has had a few homes over the past few years, and not always in the town itself, but now it finds itself at a new location at Wallsfield Lane, opposite the entrance of St. Teilo's School. Complete with full training facilities, as well as a boxing ring, one of the Tenby ABC's trainers, Mark Davies, hopes that the new premises will attract plenty of new members and also some sponsorship for the club. "We have a lot of young members between the ages of seven and 15, boys and girls, but we attract all ages really. It's a great way for people to train and get fit and healthy, as well as take an interest in developing their skills in the sport at the same time," explained Mark, who teaches members, along with fellow trainer Darren Haines and head coach Jason Cheal. The boxing club is open from 6.30 to 8.30 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It costs £10 to join (this covers membership and insurance) and £1 per session for juniors and £5 for seniors per week. Trainer Mark admits that during the off-season, when there are no shows taking place, it can prove hard for the club to keep going due to a lack of funds, so he hopes that local businesses may be able to help with sponsorship and donations.
"Until the season starts in September it is a bit of a struggle to find funds to support the club, as the rent on our new premises is quite high. We're also hoping to be able to purchase new matching kits for members, including boots, shorts and vests, so we're very grateful to anyone who can come forward and help out," said Mark, who along with the rest of the team at Tenby ABC wishes to thank all who have previously supported and sponsored the club, as well as recent contributors - Neil Finlay Car Sales; Richard Graham, of Big Brums; Paul Rogers and Sons Builders; and J.
