Giltar Hotel Shield
Monday saw the ultimate evening's bowling in the very popular Monday Evening Two Wood Triples League, generously sponsored by Miguel Gonzales, of the Giltar Hotel, Tenby. The league is well organised and run by Alan Redman and wife Alison, ably assisted by Ben Owens and Terry Preston. This random selection format was evolved in its first year, 1992, with the stated aim of improving the skills of the club's more serious players. It has proved an ideal opportunity to practise the various shots required in the important Pembroke County League games in a relaxed atmosphere. One thing is certain, you get plenty of advice if you don't come up to scratch. The presentations followed immediately after the game and club president Ben Owens, while welcoming the sponsor, Miguel, underlined the importance of sponsorship of the club, which enabled members to keep the sport of lawn green bowling alive. Miguel then presented the Giltar Hotel Shield to the winner, Ray Holly, and the minor money prizes, which ran to fifth place. Runner-up was Bert Barnikel, third was Lee Richards, fourth was Roy Powling and fifth was Sam McNeilly All players and their guests joined in the very acceptable, manly, sausage, beans and chips, skilfully produced by Alison Redman and Marnie Owens.
Important Meeting
There will be important meetings for all members on Monday. The ladies meet at 5 pm and the men at 7 pm. The main topic for both sections will be the team formation in 2005. Please make every effort to attend.
TENBY 136 FRENSHAM 90
The last of the touring sides to visit Tenby were a team from Surrey. The weather held fair, which was a nice change, given the inclement lot we have received lately. Again it was a triples game, which exercised the grey matter for the home side. Joan Dorling, along with Stuart and Dennis, picked up an eight, but as they were playing with three woods each, were denied a fullhouse, but they survived a late rally by the visitors to finish three shots clear. Vera Williams with Marlene and Steve were always in command as they strolled to a 12-shot win. In a close game, it was two counts of five that saw Dai home by two shots, with Peggy and Lon supporting the cause. Reg Thake was in great form, as a last minute replacement, to see Mike's rink home by 16 shots. After an initial outing as skip, Ted's trio lost the plot a bit as they succumbed to a 12-shot defeat. With Margaret Skyrme in great form, ably supported by wily Eric Dorling, Gwyn's crew cruised to a massive 25-shot win. No wonder the skip enjoyed his Guinness after the game. Scores (Tenby first, Frensham skips only) were: P. Best, L. Evans, D. King-Thomas 22; G. Plant 20. M. Skyrme, E. Dorling, G. Beynon 36; I. Rogers 11. G. Brutnell, R. Thake, M. Crockford 27; J. Hawkes 11. S. Askew, D. Watkins, J. Dorling 19; J. Bennett 16. M. Draper, J. Best, T. Brutnell 10; S. Wheeler 22. M. Burn, S. Taylor, V. Williams 22; T. Rutherford 10.
GOSCAR 87 (10 pts) ST. KATHERINES 80 (4)
Still smiling about their great victory over the Division Two champions, Goscar were full of optimism that they could repeat that result and finish their season on a real high when they travelled to Milford to take on a good St. Katherines side. As it turned out, all that pre-game optimism was well founded, as on a fine sunny afternoon all the boys seemed to adapt well to the very tricky green conditions and produced some great bowling as they ran out winners on two of the four rinks and ran out match winners by a margin of seven shots. Overall this was a great way to end a very enjoyable season for all the Goscar players. Well done everyone! Rob Wilkins led his rink to a superb win on rink two. After a very tight start, every one of the Goscar boys supported each other and put in fine displays to outplay there opponents. The turning point was at end 14 when they picked up a count of seven to hold a four shot lead. Obviously, this took its toll on the home team as Rob went on to pick up a further 12 unanswered shots. A further count of three at the end sealed an easy victory by 16. Rink three saw a tremendous second half fightback from skip Lewis Hilling and his rink, as at one stage, with only a few ends to go they trailed by 15 shots. From that point all rink members seemed to click and as they produced some outstanding bowling and they went on a run of 15 shots, including a five to level the scores at 20-all, with just three ends left. Unfortunately, they just couldn't quite finish the job as St. Katherines regained their composure and closed the match out to win by two. Jonathan Hubbard was involved in a very tight tussle early on in his match over on rink three as at tea the home side held a four shot advantage. The tea-break seemed alter things around in favour of Goscar, as they soon picked six shots to take the lead from where the never trailed again, and a further 10 shots over the last four ends made the victory more comfortable that it looked like early on. All four in the rink contributed well in a fine seven shot win. With a good strong looking rink, skip Harry Meads was hoping to end a disappointing league season on a high and on a winning note. Unfortunately, although the whole rink played well and had steady games and fought right to the end they found the opposition playing great bowls throughout the match and were just too strong for them as they ran out winners by a margin of 14. Rink scores (Goscar first, St. Katherines skips only) were: C. Roberts, C. Henderson, G. Hill, R. Wilkins 30; D. Mathias 14. J. Lester, A. Rootes, J. Taylor, L. Hilling 21; D. Warr 23. T. Brutnell, A. Vincent, D. Watkins, J. Hubbard 24; D. Hasting 17. S. Askew, R. Hine, S. Taylor, H. Meads 12; S. Slade 26.
