TUESDAY TRIPLES
With only a couple of weeks remaining, competition in the ladies Tuesday evening triples league is fast hotting up.
Peggy Best is still leading the group, but close on her heels are the 'bowls share' duo of Ceris Hewlings and Sandra Williams, followed by Alison Redman in third place and Christine Morgan in fourth.
Anna Hubbard is fifth, followed by Pat Stubbs, Pauline Barnikel, Phyllis Jones, Lon Evans and Rose Handicott, while in the basement is Audrey Owens and Mary Draper.
Throughout the summer, a number of subs have kindly stepped in to play, including Meryl Cooke, Burney Russell, Val James, Julia King Thomas, Irene Silcox and Margaret Skyrme.
With positions changing every week, it will no doubt go right down to the last matches before the winner of the Bowls R'Us shield is confirmed, although at the moment Peggy must certainly fancy her chances, as she has been top of the table for quite a few weeks.
The league will finish on Tuesday, September 19, and the games will be followed by a presentation ceremony in the upstairs lounge, to which all players and subs are invited.
For the remaining two Tuesdays (September 12 and 19), the league will commence at 5.30 pm and not 6 pm.
TENBY BOWLERS 58 TENBY RUGBY 56
This match was generously sponsored by St. Julians Hotel.
The usual format of lending bowls and shoes to our friends of the rugby world for this annual fun night repeated itself, with the teams playing for the beautiful trophy presented by the Thomas family seven years ago in memory of Trevor Lloyd-Jones, one of our long serving and revered members.
It was a pleasure to see how quickly the rugby men were able to master the speed of the green and some of them were remarkably skilful, no doubt secretly coached by Malcolm Brace on his beloved Heywood Lane pitch.
The bowlers, after last year's defeat, were a little more careful with the handicapping. Just a modest three shots start on each rink kept everyone on their toes and the final result was in the balance right up to the last bowls of the evening.
A very pleasant game in good company.
Ian Thomas was gracious in defeat as he presented the trophy to the bowlers and he hoped that this very friendly match would continue for many years to come.
Rink scores (bowlers first):
L. Hadman, M. Evans, P. Watkins, M. Johns 18; V. Lawrence, G. Brace, M. Dennis, A. Brace 11.
R. Hine, G. Stubbs, J. King, B. Barnikel (capt) 9; J. Stephens, S. Walsh, L. Brace, P. Day 15.
M. Walker, M. Rossiter, S. Smith, L. Richards 20; D. Brace, G. Griffiths, A. Thomas, J. Webb 12.
H. Meads, A. Rootes, R. Hurlow 11; C. Page, P. Brace, J. McDonald, M. Brace (capt) 18.
DELAYED FINALS
Ladies: The Gwyneth Batchelor Over 60s two-wood pairs. Both pairs started slowly, but when they both found the weight of the green it turned into a nail-biter. Seventeen-all on the penultimate end, Joan and Vera scraped home by the one shot in a difficult game.
Final score: Joan Dorling and Vera Williams 18; Marlene Burn and Lon Evans 17.
Gents: Evans and Johns two-wood pairs - L. Richards and J. Webb 15; I. Badham and P. Diment 17. This was an enthralling game, with Lee Richards giving a fine display of lead bowling on the one side and Paul Diment matching him as skip on the other.
One omission: The Marquiss Rose Bowl mixed pairs - Mary Morris and Ray Holly 23; Pauline and Bert Barnikel 13.
COMMITTEE MEETING
A meeting of the management committee will be held at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 12.
King Thomas Shield, Division Two...
BORDERERS 58 (0 pts)
STENA FIVE ARCHES 99 (14)
The Stena sponsored Five Arches went to Whitland on Saturday looking for maximum points in their quest for league honours. Playing excellent bowls they achieved this aim with a very good win over a committed Borderers side who put in a good effort until the last five ends when they conceded 24 shots to the Arches.
Although it had rained in the morning, the green was in very good condition, running smoothly, but a little soft in places. It certainly suited the Five Arches, with all rinks performing well.
Mike Crockford's rink had a real battle with Trevor Williams' squad and finally got home by one shot. Their opponents played well, with Colin Wynn having an outstanding game at number three. The other three rinks won comfortably, with Phil Watkins having another good match in captain Ray Holly's rink.
Keith Hubbard's rink was again steadiness itself and got another fine win, while Roy Powling's rink had a comfortable win over new Borderers' skip Des Jefferies' rink. Des looks a real find for the Borderers and had a great game against an in-form rink.
The players left Whitland confident that they could give a good display against Goscar the next day and possibly clinch the King Thomas Shield division two championship.
Rink scores (Five Arches first, Borderers skips only):
D. Spencer, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 26; D. Jefferies 13.
R. Hurlow, M. Donoghue, S. McNeilly, M. Crockford 20; T. Williams 19.
P. Watkins, S. Smith, A. Grimbaldeston, R. Holly 31; D. Ford 11.
W. Russell, B. Barnikel, L. Richards, K. Hubbard 22; D. Jennar 15.
STENA FIVE ARCHES 130 (4 pts)
GOSCAR 47 (0)
In beautiful conditions, the Stena sponsored Five Arches clinched the league title with an overwhelming win against a Goscar side who had no answer to the power play of the Arches team who were determined to win the title without having to go into the last match against Haverfordwest Castle looking for the points.
On paper, Goscar looked to have a very good side, and in this season's previous encounters with the Arches they had taken points with several rink wins.
But on this occasion, even with the return of captain Graham Hill, they were unable to raise their game sufficiently to mount a real challenge.
Biggest win was the rink of captain Ray holly over Gavin Crawford's rink by 24 shots. This was sweet revenge after the loss to Gavin the previous week.
The rink of Roy Powling had another win over the Bill Best combination, Gwyn Beynon having an outstanding game, well backed up by the front two of Tony Powling and Neil Dickinson.
Lee Richards had another fine game in the Keith Hubbard rink, and they finished with a 16-shot advantage.
Mike Crockford and his crew were again pitted against the Bill Bailey combination and with 25 shots in the second half of the game cruised home by 20. Front men Ron Hurlow and Max Donoghue, ably supported by Mac McNeilly, gave the skip an easy passage.
After the game, captain Ray Holly praised his team for a great season's work in winning the King Thomas Shield and rewarded the players in a suitable manner.
The Five Arches can now look forward to a crack at the first division teams next season, including their friends in the Tenby squad.
The captain would like to thank Liz's Bakery for their generosity in sponsoring this match.
Rink scores (Five Arches first):
R. Hurlow, M. Donoghue, S. McNeilly, M. Crockford 34; T. Kelly, B. Brace, R. Thake, B. Bailey 14.
N. Dickinson, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 30; J. Hubbard, A. Vincent, G. Stubbs, B. Best 8.
P. Watkins, S. Smith, A. Grimbaldeston, R. Holly 37; H. Meads, E. Dorling, G. Hill, G. Crawford 12.
W. Russell, B. Barnikel, L. Richards, K. Hubbard 29; A. Rootes, J. King, W. Hooper, J. Taylor 13.
