The 10th Tenby Blues Festival takes place over this weekend, November 13-15.
Full details of the amazing line-up and details of how to purchase tickets are to be found at www.tenbyblues.co.uk.
From today (Friday) until Sunday, this beautiful seaside town will be rocking once again to the sounds of blues and blues related music as large numbers of visitors and locals descend on Tenby to enjoy dozens of superb performers.
Three ticketed venues - the De Valence, Tenby Rugby Club and the Fourcroft Hotel - will be hosting shows by some of the most exciting and sought-after blues musicians around.
Headlining the De Valence tonight (Friday) will be the doyenne of British and European blues, Connie Lush, of whom the late BB King exclaimed ‘that woman makes my heart sing!’, and tomorrow (Saturday) billtopper Jo Harman could be described as the young pretender to Connie’s throne. Jo recently returned from recording her latest album in Nashville (the previous one being recorded at London’s Albert Hall for the BBC) and draws her influences from rock and country as much as blues. Huey Morgan (of Fun Loving Criminals) declared Jo’s powerful and heartfelt singing to have left him speechless! She has a world class band backing with her as they take you on a rollercoaster of emotions through orginal songs and choice covers - Bob Dylan’s ‘Forever Young’ like you’ve never heard it before. The spirits of Janis Joplin and Dusty Springfield live on.
Supporting these two great singers and performers will be The Blues Duo and Wille and the Bandits tonight (Friday), plus Rollo Markee and the Tailshakers and Blind Boy Paxton tomorrow (Saturday).
The Daily Telegraph described Wille and the Bandits as quite simply ‘the best live act in the country’, which is not surprising considering the energy they put into their genre-busting music which encompasses Latin, soul, reggae, surf, and yes, blues!
As for visiting American, Blind Boy Paxton, he is quite simply, the living embodiment of the blues and its roots. A talented multi-instrumentalist and an emotive vocalist, Blind Boy dips into the rich acoustic tradition, a tradition capable of absorbing Robert Johnson, the Carter Family and many more. And delivered with a warm, engaging intimacy. A must see!
The rugby club shows emphasise other sides of the blues, including its roots and shoots, with gigs from Matt Woosey (Acoustic Artist of the Year 2015, Blues and Soul Magazine), rockabilly legend John Lewis, the irresistibly danceable Cajun and Zydeco sounds of Whiskey River, and of course The Worried Men, who are just as likely to follow a ferocious take on Blind Willie McTell’s ‘Statesboro’ Blues’ with The Troggs’ ‘I Can’t Control Myself.’
The Fourcroft Hotel shows begin at midnight and last into the wee wee hours, with many of the day’s stars getting on stage to jam.
Last year, most of these events sold out, so don’t delay in booking your tickets.
One of the reasons the festival won Best Event 2014 in the Pembrokeshire Tourism Awards is because of its unique Blues Trail which sees over two-dozen acts perform at cafés, hotels, clubs, bars, and restaurants all over Tenby from noon until late tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday. These include not only the best local blues acts, but performers of national renown who play at Tenby because they love the vibe. See The Rumblestrutters play prohibiton era jazz and hokum, Bella Collins or Toriah Fontaine sing soul and jazz standards, Sicknote Steve hollering along with his homemade instruments, and festival president Pat Grover, a legend on the UK blues scene since the 1960s, get low down and dirty with his fingerpoppingly brilliant band The Hawks. And so it goes on. All Blues Trail gigs are free to get into!
A weekend of fabulous music at one of the UK’s best music festivals is not to be missed. Sunshine may not be guaranteed, but all performances are indoors. So what are you waiting for?
Tenby Blues Festival is sponsored by Radio Pembrokeshire, Valero, FBM Holidays, and Tenby Brewing Co. www.tenbyblues.co.uk.
