In just over two weeks time, on Saturday, September 18, eight days of music, dance, poetry, talks, film and drama will begin in Tenby. This year's Tenby Arts Festival will present a feast of entertainment to suit all tastes and you can peruse at leisure the programme enclosed with this newspaper before deciding which events you must attend. A glittering array of performances by local, national and international artistes will provide plenty of choice. Highlights include Karolinka, Polish national folk dancers; the Chamber Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes; Beverley Humphreys providing 'Seven Women Under One Hat'; the B Natural Ladies' Barbershop Choir and the United Harmony Gospel Singers. In addition, the Austrian duo Medici and the early music ensemble La Volta will extend the range of options available. For choral music lovers, an evening of mainly sacred music in 'Anniversaries and Celebrations' will be sung by three choirs under conductor Dr. John Harrison. Other local choirs featured throughout the week of the Festival will be Tenby Male Choir, Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir and of course St. Mary's Church Choir. This year, cinema will be included with the classic Hollywood musical featuring Gigi, Cabaret and High Society. Daytime talks by experts in their fields have always been a feature of the festival and this year, Professor Tony Curtis will discuss 'The Voice of Poetry', Professor Ian Parrott will examine his half-century in music, Brother Gildas from Caldey will consider the spirituality of the sea and Professor Anthony Campbell will ask the question 'The Real Darwin - Britain's Greatest Poet?' The festival opens on Saturday, September 18, with a grand street parade, followed by an afternoon of free family fun presented by a host of talented musicians, dancers and street entertainers around the harbour. The following day, Sunday, a sand sculpture competition and a kite flying display on South Beach will occupy and amuse children of all ages, making it a weekend to remember.
