At the start of the first meeting in September, the president, Peter Durdin, was pleased to welcome Ken Fryer to the club. It is hoped that Ken enjoyed it and will become a full member.
Birthday boys for the day were Ron Hurlow, Doug Silcox, Bertie Best and John Tipton. Not all born in the same year, but January must have been a busy time of year for young fathers.
The club had received a letter from Mill Hill Probus Club, near Huddersfield, plus a booklet recording their 25th anniversary. Best wishes were exchanged with them.
Don't forget the Ladies' Day on September 30!
Speaker for the morning was the vice-president, Darrel John. He continued his previous talk with part two of the history of the wars in Afghanistan, from 1841 until the present conflict. With his usual aplomb, he intertwined the past and the present to form an interesting patchwork of information.
The success of his tale was apparent by the questions and anecdotes indulged in by the members at the conclusion of his talk; this is always a good sign. It seems that part three will be given at a later date.
The next meeting is on September 16, when speaker will be Lew Day. Ring Lew on 844633 for more information.
