The July 1 meeting was well attended and a fine social atmosphere was generated. The president, Peter Durdin, welcomed Don Cale to the club. He is the 196th member during the club's 27 years.
The secretary read a letter from the New Mill Probus Club thanking members for the photos and letters sent and conveying good wishes to them all.
At the moment, the trip at the end of the month to Aberaeron is still on, but a few more names would be appreciated.
Speaker was Harold James (he who talks to the ducks and plays a mean pianoforte). His subject was well rehearsed and contained many amusing anecdotes from the trip to the Peak District. Did the Peak District Council really post a sign that read 'Welcome to Bakewell, birthplace of the world's greatest tarts?' Harold seems to think so!
Ray Poole then produced two of the hands from the clock face at St. Mary's Church which are currently being repaired, re-guilded and re-balanced. Some of these hands go back to the 1700s and they are in better shape than a few of the members who are of far lesser vintage.
The next meeting is on July 15 when it is hoped the speaker will be Arthur Squibbs.
