The president, Tony Webster, started the second meeting in June by welcoming a new member, Mr. Tom Peake. It was nice to see a new face and it is hoped that there will be many more to follow. Anniversary boy for the day was the president and the secretary was obliged to lead the congratulations from those present owing to the shyness of the great one. Arthur Squibbs was pleased to report that there were 30-plus members showing an interest in the trip to Ireland in the spring of 2008. He will press on with his enquiries about coaches, dates and costs. More of this in a later report. It was with regret that members heard of the resignation of Don Ramsay. It is hoped that he will return to the fold when once again he has the time. Speaker for the morning was Darrel John, who told of his experiences, as a fire officer, with the Torrey Canyon disaster back in the 1960s. This obviously is still fresh in his memory. His talk contained several items of which the public were not aware, but he never broke the 'D' notice which was placed upon him. Thank you, Darrel, for an interesting talk, which stirred up memories for several members. He finished off the morning by taking group photos which will be displayed at the service and buffet on July 14. The next Ladies Day will be on August 29 when a slide talk on New Guinea will be given by John Tipton. This will be followed by a wine and cheese buffet. The next club meeting is on July 4 when the speaker will be Ray Poole. If you are a retired gentleman, who not join go along and see what Ray has to say. Phone Lew Day on 844633 for more information.
