We're now starting to wonder whether the extended spell of cold weather this year has hastened the annual migration of many fish species which head for deeper water around now to spawn.

After some very encouraging returns from the early January matches, things have somewhat slowed up. However, there's a blow forecast for the coming weekend, so perhaps Sunday's match at Pendine may yet show some good late Flounders and a possible early Bass.

January 23, beach rover: The lads had venues of their own choice for this match and Saundersfoot (no surprise there!), Wiseman's Bridge and Tenby North were visited.

Even though conditions remained cold and quite still wind wise, after recent matches it was reasonable to be confident that the Dabs at least would still be around.

Whilst Dab, Flounder, Whiting and Coalies were caught, just a couple of the flatties were in size.

Results were - 1. John Nicholas, Flounder 0.418kg; 2. Ben Cook, Flounder 0.329kg; 3. Nev Andrews, Dab 0.218kg

January 26, mid-week match: It remained cold for this match, with a nagging north-easterly breeze which added to the chill factor. At least we're used to these conditions now!

Nine anglers booked in, including new member Mick Bowles, and they headed for Lydstep and Freshwater East. Fresh East produced some Coalies, but nothing in size, with the prizes going to some of those that chose Lydstep. Well done to Mick Bowles for getting amongst the winnings on his first trip with the club.

LSD, Rockling and Dab were weighed in and results were - 1. Barry (Where for art thou Fernando?) Taylor, LSD 0.752kg; 2. Peter Taylor, bag 0.667kg; 3. Mick Bowles, Rockling 0.121kg.

January 30, rover: We'll get this out of the way quickly! A crisp morning greeted the anglers at Hobbs as registration was taken for the first roving match. That's it! Finito! No in-size fish weighed in and home for dinner pdq!

Next match is a beach match on Sunday at Pendine, fishing from 2 to 6 pm, so quite civilised. Access has been requested so can anglers be at the booking in by about 1 pm. Given that there may be a bit of a blow on the Friday and Saturday, conditions could well be spot on for the venue, but we'll have to decide on whether we go up the beach on the day.

After that, the next mid-week takes place on February 9, from 7 to 11 as normal. Then it's a welcome weekend off and time to catch our breath!
