Following a ballot amongst town councillors, Tenby is to have its first male Mayor in 10 years. However, the man elected to don the scarlet robes of office will not be a newcomer to the position, as he previously filled the role of the town's First Citizen back in 1996. With two councillors putting their names forward, Clr. Trevor Hallett narrowly defeated Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, following a vote amongst their colleagues. He will succeed the current Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter, who said that she had very much enjoyed her year. "Since I joined the council, this man has been a constant source of knowledge and advice to me," said Clr. John Griffiths in proposing Clr. Hallett, with Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown adding: "Trevor has all the qualities needed to serve the people of the town." Clr. Hallett, who has been a member of the town council since 1987, thanked his fellow members for their kind words and said that he aimed to "keep a good ship sailing." Born in Monkton, Pembroke, Clr. Hallett moved at an early age to East Minerton, Devonshire Drive, where his parents ran a smallholding and agricultural contracting business and later a small touring caravan complex. Educated in St. Florence and Coronation Schools, Clr. Hallett worked in construction contracting for a number of years until he and his late wife, Marjorie, opened a painting and decorating shop in Upper Frog Street, with Clr. Hallett retiring in 1994 due to ill-health. Clr. Hallett, of 1 Cogmill Cottage, The Green, is the nephew of a much-remembered figure in local government, the late Miss Winnie Hallett. Clr. Hallett, well-known for his environmental and ecological interests, has a daughter, Abigail, and four grandchildren. The traditional Mayor-making ceremony will be held on Friday, May 19.
