Ten people were arrested for alleged drugs offences following a large scale police operation in Tenby on Friday night.

Over 40 officers from the Pembrokeshire division, including uniform, CID, dog handlers and special constables were involved in an operation designed to target drug offenders travelling into the area to various licensed premises.

As a result, 10 people from the Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and Pembroke areas were arrested and quantities of heroin, ecstasy, cannabis resin and herbal cannabis were seized.

Three people were charged with alleged possession with intent to supply and bailed to appear before the next Tenby Naery Court.

Seven people were cautioned for possession of controlled drugs.

Four people were also arrested and charged for public order offences, while the heavy police presence prevented other offences being caused.

Chief Inspector Roger Hughes, who was in charge of the operation, was delighted with its success.

"This will be an ongoing feature of local policing," he told the Observer this week.

"Where we think there will be large groups of people gathered, we will be looking into public protection issues.

"While this will include licensing, public safety and so forth, we will also be looking at the possibilities of whether illegal drugs dealers will also target such events.

"We want people to enjoy themselves, but we also have a responsibility to protect the public.

"Friday night's operation was very successful with a significant quantity of Class A drugs seized.

"The Pembrokeshire division has a dedicated band of officers targeting illegal drugs dealing within the area and I'm delighted to see that there has been a 274 per cent increase in the value of seizures between 1999 and 2000.

"We will be continuing to mount similar operations in a bid to prevent drug dealers travelling into the area to take advantage of such events."
