Friday, June 29, saw the climax of this year's 'Activate' Welsh Primary Schools Hockey Competition. Nine teams attended the finals held at the Maldwyn Leisure Centre in Newtown out of the 200 teams that had entered the competition back in January. The teams from Alway, Bryn Collen, Guilsfield, Llanfaes, Llwyncrwn, Nantymoel, Pendoylan, Penybryn and Templeton all enjoyed a day of hockey organised by Amanda Roberts (hockey development officer for Cardiff). For the second time in three years, a team from Templeton School were amongst the finalists representing West Wales. Despite the early start and long journey, all the children played very well and never gave up. In the group stages they drew their first game and lost the remaining games. However, not to be deterred, in the play-off stages they won their games and finished a very creditable seventh place. The final was contested between Bryn Collen (Flintshire) and Llanfaes (Brecon), with Llanfaes winning one-nil and retaining the Welsh title they won last year. Templeton played them in the group stages, only losing one-nil, and this gives the team a lot of hope for next year as five of the players will still be at the school and available to play. The school would like to say a big thank you to 'Credland Firewood' who generously paid for the bus that transported the children and supporters to the finals in Newtown.
