The first fundraising event organised by the newly set-up Tenby Save the Children branch will be held at Church House, on Thursday, November 27, at 7 pm.
Caroline Williams and her husband Phil have returned to their native Pembrokeshire after living in Cardiff for the past 20 years.
They have bought Bridge House, overlooking Tenby harbour, and in the process of renovation a number of archaeological artefacts have been revealed, namely a medieval well and path, which prompted an interest in the history of Tenby, and lots of tales from local residents.
This inspired Caroline to investigate 'Tales of Tenby,' and this has led to the concept of a fundraising evening, with local characters giving renditions of these stories from Tenby's long and interesting history.
Save the Children is a charity very close to Caroline's heart and she has been a member of the Women in Wales Committee for many years which organises a luncheon in Cardiff that raises thousands of pounds for the charity every year. She also established the Penarth Save the Children branch in 2005 in response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami. This branch has raised nearly £50,000 and Caroline hopes the new Tenby fundraising branch will follow their lead.
"We kept finding different historical bits and pieces in the building, which have all been documented by local archaeologists who were on board with us throughout this restoration project," said Caroline. "This in turn triggered a wave of Tenby people coming up to us and sharing their tales about Tenby through the ages.
"I thought this would make such a great social evening for the community to be able to come together and find out a bit more about their local history. That is why I have organised a special evening called 'Tell a Tale of Tenby' at the end of this month to give the locals a chance to share their knowledge about their Tenby with others. Who knows where this could take us? I hope all that we have unearthed and learnt from this can be recorded for prosperity.
"A warm welcome is extended to the people of Tenby to come and share their tales with us on November 27 and help raise money for a great charity at the same time."
