Pembrokeshire coroner, Mr. Michael Howells, has said that a Kilgetty teenager died from head injuries he sustained after falling down fire escape steps after a night out in Saundersfoot. Mr. Howells recorded the verdict at an inquest last week into the death of 18-year-old Oliver John Morgan, of Clayford Hill, Clayford Road. The inquest at Milford Haven heard that keen sportsman 'Ollie' had been out with a few friends after finishing his shift on the night of Friday, June 29, at Saunderfoot's Deck Bar, where he worked part-time as a kitchen assistant. The licensee of the Deck, Lawson Cramb, explained that he last saw Ollie around 10 pm that evening. However, the former Greenhill School pupil, who was studying sports science at Pembrokeshire College, failed to turn up for work the following evening, and on Sunday, his father, Richard Morgan, enquired if anyone had seen him. Mr. Cramb went onto the flat roof of the premises to check if Ollie's bike was in its usual place in the rear car park and, as he turned back, spotted a body on the ground at the bottom of the Cambrian Hotel fire door stairs. After calling the police, the area was cordoned off, and Ollie's footprints were identified climbing up the stairs, but not coming down. CCTV cameras captured the last sighting of the teenager sitting on a wall near the Sands Club, on the Friday night. A report by a Home Office forensic pathologist, called in by Mr. Howells, said that Ollie's death was due to skull fractures caused by a fall, while toxicology tests showed 68 mgms of alcohol in his blood, a moderate amount compared with the driving limit of 80 mgms. "I can't think why he should want to go up those stairs at all, but it seems, in doing so, he fell off and suffered severe head injuries," said Mr. Howells, before recording a verdict that Ollie died from head injuries caused by a fall on private premises, having consumed alcohol.
