A happy and successful weekend has resulted in well over £1,200 being raised for two worthwhile charities at St. Mary's Church, Begelly.

The eagerly-awaited teddy bear exhibition and parachute jump brought in locals and holidaymakers alike and the successful initiative was blessed with good weather, fun and co-operation.

A total of 220 teddy bears took part in the exhibition and scenes from church life were depicted by tableaux of teddies dressed as choristers, bell ringers, attending weddings and christenings and more. Even Bishop Ted was there, together with the Rev. Edwina.

Local groups also made up displays and the church in Begelly was packed with entertaining and amusing teddies for the visitors to enjoy

The parachute jump on the Saturday afternoon was a true highlight, with over 60 brave teddies making the jump from the top of the tower.

They had their own parachutes or had been supplied with excellent parachutes by the organisers, and although there were a couple of tense moments, all bears survived to tell the tale and receive their certificates.

A vote of thanks must go to the teddy medics who, with stretcher and bandages, coped well with the flurry of activity and ensured all bears had appropriate treatment.

The winning teddy, Morgan, was owned by Jenny Barfoot, mum to Sophie and Jacob, and who skilfully landed within 19 cm of the mark!

The church congregation worked hard to present this novel event and were rewarded with enthusiastic reviews.

Some comments heard were: "The adults are enjoying it as much as the children" and "A lovely way to open the church and grounds to families".

Rev. Sarah, of St. Mary's, said: It was a wonderful weekend that brought everyone together. All watched the parachute jump with a smile; it was a very happy event.

"I would like to say thank you to all individuals, businesses and organisations who took part and ofcourse all in the church family who generously gave their time and energy and helped in practical ways to ensure that this was such a success."

The tower appeal has benefited by £1,150 and the auction of teddy bears raised £350 for the NSPCC.
