The first of (hopefully) many fund-raising activities took place at Greenhill School on Thursday, May 13. Two Sixth Form bands, 'Johnny Prophet' and 'The New Black', waged war in a 'Battle of the Bands'.

Behaviour Support teacher, Denise Stanley, has pledged to raise £2,500 by August so that she can participate in the Brazilian Wilderness trek for Breast Cancer Care. Denise will be joining over 40 other people to raise money to support those affected by breast cancer.

Denise will be trekking for six days, covering a total of 84km. This is a remote part of Brazil and the particular route chosen has barely been walked either by locals or westerners. The terrain and scenery are amazingly varied, taking you through canyons and across Savannah and passing through a number of local Indian communities.

Denise commented: "I have never undertaken anything like this before and it will certainly be a different challenge for me! I am following a strict training programme to make sure that I am fit enough to complete the route."

Judging the best band was an impossible task and was eventually decided on by the toss of a coin! 'Johnny Prophet' won, a choice much appreciated by the crowd!

Generously, Bruce Campbell, who helped judge the event, has given a wonderful prize of a free recording session at his Winderton Studio in New Hedges. Expect to hear much more of these two talented local bands.

The Battle of the Bands raised £132 for Breast Cancer Care and Denise would like to extend her thanks to 'Johnny Prophet' and 'The New Black', pupils and staff for supporting her. Thank you also to Tenby Infants School, Art Matters and Miss D. A. Davies for their support.

'Johnny Prophet': Charles Upham, Dan Rowe, Sam Harman, Owen Bridge.

'The New Black': Tom James, Jason Llama, Joe Duffy, Emily Lewis.
