National concerns about childhood obesity and an awareness of a growing number of pupils being on the large side, motivated Tavernspite CP School to embark on regular aerobics training sessions.
"We were aware that some pupils are not inspired by team games like netball and wanted a form of exercise that would appeal to them," explained Mrs. Marilyn Molyneux, teacher.
"Knowing how enjoyable aerobic exercise to music was and how you can do it at any level and any age, we decided this form of exercise would appeal to our target pupils."
The school successfully applied for a Sport Lottery grant which enabled them to pay for the services of qualified aerobics teacher, Trish Chalmers, who has been coming to the school to train aerobic style exercises for two months.
"Her expertise has taught us how to devise and deliver aerobic sessions to our pupils, and we have enjoyed and benefited from this experience so much that we are considering taking a professional qualification in aerobics at a later date," continued Mrs. Molyneux.
"To assist our voices during the aerobic sessions, Creative Electronics have given us a generous discount on a microphone which we are very grateful for."
The school intend to run an after school weekly session of aerobics for their junior pupils and on Tuesday every junior class participated in a full aerobic session to give them a taste of what to expect in the after school club.
