The stunning Colby Woodland Gardens was the setting for the annual fun run organised by Tavernspite School FoTS (Friends of Tavernspite School) on the May Day Bank Holiday Saturday. Held in beautiful spring sunshin, over 150 runners of all ages, from three years to adult, took part in a variety of different distances from 1K to 5K.
Tavernspite, widely recognised for its commitment to sport, wellbeing and the outdoor environment organised the event to fulfil its vision as an outdoor and active school.
Children from Tavernspite, Templeton and many other local schools, as well as numerous competitors on holiday turned up to race in near perfect conditions. The beautiful sunshine really helped to create a warm, relaxed and thoroughly happy atmosphere with many people enjoying coffee, cake and other refreshments from the Bothy Tea Room.
After the races, there were medals for all finishers and attractive trophies for the winning male and female in each age category. The course followed the route of the weekly Parkrun which takes place at Colby Woodland Gardens at 9 am every Saturday morning. The whole experience was enhanced by the Parkrun weekly volunteers who very kindly stayed to support the children, marshal the course, time the races and gave an official status to the whole occasion.
Headteacher Kevin Phelps said:?“We were delighted that so many people came to our fun run. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves in this beautiful place and getting fit and active at the same time. I am very grateful to the team of Parkrun volunteers for all their help again this year. I would also like to thank Mr. Steve Whitehead, Colby Woodland Gardens manager, and his team for their help and support in allowing us to host the event at Colby, despite it being an extremely busy time with the Bank Holiday weekend.
