The sun is shining on Tavernspite CP School after the school ponds were subject to a recent installation of a solar powered system to power the fountain and pump following an award of a Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services grant. The solar powered system, installed by St Clears based sustainable energy specialists 911 Environmental, converts the sun's energy which has travelled 146 million kilometres (96 million miles) into electricity, which in turn powers a water pump to circulate approximately 1,500 litres an hour of water between the two school ponds. Rebecca Bird, of 911, said: "This is one of many educational systems we supply to schools which aims to develop children's knowledge by engaging them in practical and interactive school-based projects, encouraging future generations to develop an interest in renewable energy." Mrs. Julie Houghton, eco school teacher, added: "The system is a good educational tool and allows the eco group, pupils, parents and local community to develop a better understanding of renewable energy technologies." Following the installation, the children were given the opportunity to talk to Rebecca Bird, of 911 Environmental, who presented diagrams and gave talks to staff and pupils on how their system works.
