Lunchtime at Tenby Junior School on Wednesday was an extra special one for three lucky pupils. Year 5 students Molly Spencer, Becca Luly and Georgia Poole had been chosen to sample the new potatoes which had been grown in their own vegetable garden and harvested that day. The school had, for the first time, entered the Potatoes for Schools competition run by the Potato Council, growing seed potatoes provided by the council. The Potatoes for Schools project offers a valuable hands-on learning experience whereby students can find out where potatoes come from and how they grow. Tying in with the school's commitment to recycling, kitchen staff had composted kitchen waste in the wormery. The liquid fertiliser produced by the worms was collected and filtered by caretaker, Mr. Ted Hughes. Under his guidance, Molly, Becca and Georgia had nurtured the potato plants and had harvested the crop which were then cooked in the school kitchen. Kitchen staff had seasoned then using mint and chives also grown on site.
