A Tenby student hoping to achieve a gold Duke of Edinburgh award has received a financial boost from local councillors.

Members of Tenby Town Council received correspondence from 16-year-old Greenhill School pupil Rachelle Vickery at their meeting on Tuesday night, with the A-level student explaining that she intended participating in the Channel Island Tall Ship Sailing Challenge in April, and was seeking sponsorship.

"The voyage aims to teach young people the necessary skills involved with sailing, and I will be part of the crew and will learn about teamwork and communication, two skills which will benefit me in all areas of life," wrote Rachelle.

Clr. Mike Evans said that there was a great tradition at Greenhill of students taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh awards, while Clr. Mrs. Kerri Durham said it would be a worthy donation.

"We've always supported these kind of challenges for local students and I do hope she will tell us how it all went when she comes back from it," said Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane.

Councillors agreed to donate £150 to the Greenhill pupil's challenge.
