The first three home in the Saturday stableford on October 25 could only be separated on countback. After taking the back nine into consideration, Ken Badham, Richard Davies and Rob Evans finished in that order, all scoring an impressive regulation 36 points. Steve Wedlake, Bob Burks, Tom Fletcher and Meurig Evans each scored a two.
The midweek stablefords have drawn a healthy entry throughout October. No doubt the lovely autumn weather, coupled with superb course conditions, has been a factor. Mike Evans was on top form in the Tuesday stableford on October 21. He won with 37 points. Pat Corcoran was second with 34.
It was John Smith's turn to shine on Thursday, October 23. On a day when others found scoring difficult, he notched up a fine 38 points to win, with Mike Evans again in the frame, this time second with 34. Garfield Price was third with 32, a score he went on to better on Tuesday, October 28, when he won with 34. Once again, Mike Evans was prominent, also scoring 34, but finishing runner-up on countback. An end to the fine weather meant there was no game on October 30.
The eclectic competition has reached the halfway stage and finishes on Friday, November 28. Competitors will have played early rounds off the summer tees before completing their six cards off winter tees. Roger Cryer is unlikely to forget his first round in a hurry, the headmaster getting off to a flyer when holing out from 100 yards for eagle two, net albatross one at the 10th.
The switch to winter tees has been made later than usual this year, enabling members to enjoy their early autumn golf from the summer tees. The course will offer a fresh challenge this winter as head greenkeeper Peter Edwards has adjusted some of previously generous winter tee positions. These are now little different to those used in the summer and members can expect the course to provide a sterner test of winter golf than ever.
