Trefloyne's Dyfed League team have recently contested two close fought away matches. The first, at St. David's, was played in excellent conditions, and was notable for the result of the top match, an extraordinary 7 and 6 defeat for Chris Thompson and Meurig Evans.
In the second match, Roger Thompson and Rob Evans, three up at one stage, only managed to halve, despite Rob playing brilliantly (about five over par gross).
Mike Ansell and Steve Wedlake hauled Trefloyne back into the match, winning one up. Mel Beeley and Mike Hale lost 3 and 2, but Gerald John and John Smith earned Trefloyne another point with a 2 and 1 win.
Brian Cowley and Richard Preece lost a thriller one down, and Ivan Kirk and John James, with the game at their mercy, sadly three putted the last to halve. The result was a 4-3 win for St. David's.
A week later, the team travelled to Rosemarket, described by the captain as "the most interesting of courses," and again conditions were ideal.
Mike Ansell and Steve Wedlake posted an early win, one up, and Roger Thompson and Roger Cryer retrieved an excellent half from dormie three down, the team captain contributing two birdies in the last three. With the allegedly affianced Mel Beeley and Mike Hale winning 3 and 2, the scoreboard was encouraging for the visitors.
There was to be a tense finish, however, with Brinley Hughes and Paul Griffiths losing 3 and 2, and Ivan Kirk and John James losing one down. Rob Evans and Gary Heesom salvaged a half, and thankfully Graham Harrison and Perry Jenkins came in one up in the final game to clinch a welcome away win for Trefloyne by 4-3.
Team captain Roger Thompson was delighted with his side's first away win of the season. "This will give us a lot of confidence for the next fixture, at Cymrhydneuadd on July 19," he said.
Trefloyne's team in the recent Welsh Handicap Team Championship performed valiantly, but without success at Ashburnham in early June. The format was best three stableford scores from four and the team of Ian Lawrence, Garfield Price, Alan Jones and Steve Wedlake finished with a hard earned total of 76. Steve Wedlake played well to contribute 31, but for the rest it was very much a learning experience.
Mel Neale recorded his first competition win for some time, scoring 38 points to win the stableford on Sunday, June 22. Garfield Price was second with 35 and Richard Davies third on countback with 33. There were no twos.
Recent midweek stablefords have been well supported. Wayne Connet won on Tuesday, June 24, with 37 points. Mike Evans was second with 36 and Roger Cryer third with 33. Meurig Evans won with 36 on Thursday, June 26. Paul Griffiths was second with 35 and John Smith, 34, just edged out Ivan Kirk for third, on countback.
The Father and Son competition was played as a better ball pairs stableford over 12 holes on Sunday, June 22. Ashley and Stuart Evans were the triumphant pair, scoring a handsome 31 points. James and Bob Maxwell, Jason and Greg Palin and the mother and son combination of Sam and Caroline Fletcher all tied second with 28 points each.
