As the winter/spring league enters its closing stages, there is certain to be a close finish in the top division for handicaps 0-15. Long time leader Dean Rawlins has one round to play. He has 302 from his best eight cards, and faces a stiff challenge from Meurig Evans who has 299, also from his best eight, but with two rounds to play. Conceivably, Roger Thompson, currently third on 280 from eight and in great form at present, could make up the ground as he has four rounds remaining. In joint fourth, on 279 each, are Phil Catlin and Mel Neale, with Mike Ansell in sixth on 276.

Garfield Price has overhauled Brian Norman, the early leader in Division Two. The leader now has 297 from eight, and is seemingly impregnable as he has four rounds left to play and could therefore still improve on his total. Brian Norman remains second with 287, but has completed all 12 rounds. Ken Badham is third on 264, John Smith fourth on 261, and Terry Whiston and Peter Scourfield share fifth place with 258 each, and they all have a lot to do to catch the leader.

Spring sunshine sees the course in fine order, with plenty of run on the fairways, a nice layer of top dressing on the greens, and plenty of cars in the car park on Tuesdays and Thursdays, indicating high turnouts for the midweek stablefords. Antony Knowles won on Tuesday, March 18, scoring 38 points to squeeze out the in-form Roger Cryer, second on 37. Mel Beeley and John Bancroft tied third with 36 each.

Roger Cryer (was he smarting from the fact that his handicap had not been reduced in the annual review?) determined to do better two days later, and fairly trotted up with a splendid 41-point haul and it's just as well he broke the 40-point barrier as late starters Gilroy Thomas and Con Kearney each scored 39, with Gil taking second place on countback. So, has the headmaster, recently elected to the committee, done enough to interest his handicap colleagues? Watch this space!

There is much to interest Trefloyne Seniors in coming weeks. Their first two matches of the season are away to Milford Haven on April 3, and away to Carmarthen on April 10. The latter is an eagerly awaited new fixture for 2003. Seniors captain Graham Wharton has arranged a Seniors golf tour for April 4 and 5. This involves a two-night stay in Swansea and two rounds of golf. Details are on the notice board.

The Juniors are asked to put their names down for the Carl French Electronics Matchplay competition as soon as possible.
