Members entered for the Medstab competition on Saturday, November 2, demonstrated commendable common sense and made no effort whatsoever to take on the course in the wet and windy conditions which prevailed. Despite the recent deluges, the course remains in splendid condition thanks to the efforts of Peter Edwards and his colleagues who before much longer may well be regarded as the star players of this rather damp autumn at Trefloyne.
That is not to belittle the efforts of the early leaders in the eclectic competition, in which two rounds have now been completed. There have been some excellent performances in both sections.
In the Tigers division, Mike Ansell, who set a hot pace in round one, has already been overhauled by Mel Neale, whose current score is a handsome net 61. Mike Ansell remains second on 63, having failed to improve on his first effort, while Roger Cryer and Meurig Evans have moved into joint third on 64. Ivan Kirk is fifth on 65 and joint sixth are Mel Beeley and Chic Brown on 66.
It is good to see a number of the newer members prominent in the Rabbits division of the eclectic. Mike Williams is the early leader on 59, but he only just leads John Chirnside, second on 60. Brian Norman is third on 63, and Tony Knowles is fourth on 64. Neil Thomas and Terry Whiston are next on 65.
The first Tuesday stableford for some weeks took place on November 5. The fireworks came from Barry Thorne who won with 37. Ivan Kirk also sparkled, scoring 35 to finish second. John Rolfe was third on 32, but the rest fizzled out like damp squibs in the misty, drizzly conditions.
In contrast to the Tuesday game, the Seniors played the Thursday stableford on November 7 in warm sunshine. Despite his recent handicap reduction to 11, Mike Ansell still managed to plunder 39 points and ran out a comfortable winner. John Cliff was second on 36, and Jack Zeraschi, David Owen and Ivan Kirk all tied third with 34 points each.
