A handsome cheque for £1,250 was recently presented to the Trust for Sick Children in Wales by the captains of Trefloyne Golf Club, Alan Brown and Liz Crockford. This sum was raised at the Trefloyne Invitation Challenge in May.
"Once again, I would like to thank all those who participated in the event, and, of course, the many sponsors, for their valued support. It is thanks to them that we have been able to make such a substantial donation," said men's captain, Alan Brown, at the presentation.
Meurig Evans went one better than his runner-up spot in June, to win the 0-15 handicap division of the July monthly medal. An excellent net 70 was enough to pip the formidable Chris Thompson, net 71, for first place. Carl French was third with net 74.
There was a three-way tie in the 16-24 division, with Terry Whiston taking the honours on countback, with Brian Norman second and Barry Thorne third, all scoring net 77.
Carl French, Peter Scourfield and Barry Thorne each registered a two.
Ladies' captain Liz Crockford, teamed with treasurer Ian Lawrence, took the Whitewell Cup, a mixed pairs foursomes event, on Sunday, July 7. This was tough on Dave and Sue Shooter whose 32 points matched the winners, but Liz and Ian took the silverware thanks to a better back nine. Peter and Michaela Edwards were only just off the pace, third with 31.
The final of the Carl French Electronics Matchplay Cup for Juniors was played on June 22. Luke Laidler beat Adam Thomas 4 and 2 to become the first winner of this newly sponsored trophy. In the third place play-off, Nathan Lewis beat Tom Hilling 5 and 4.
The Juniors combined their July monthly medal with the qualifier for the Celtic Manor Resort PGA Junior Championship. The medal winner in the 0-14 handicap division was Nathan Lewis with gross 85, net 72. Luke Laidler won the 15-28 division with gross 89, net 73.
As a result, Nathan and Luke both qualify for the next round of the PGA, but as Luke will be unable to play, his place is taken by Simon Hilling (gross 86, net 75), who finished third in the qualifier.
