Trefloyne Seniors set out for their annual match at Tenby on July 4, full of optimism which was soon to be punctured by one of the harsher facts of life: links golf is a completely different experience to that enjoyed on the manicured fairways that Peter Edwards provides at Trefloyne.
Not that the visitors disgraced themselves by any means. Captain Graham Wharton led from the front as he and Chic Brown won the top game, but the next few pairs struggled. George King and Mel Beeley received a special mention afterwards for managing to lose when receiving 10 shots - but in fairness they were up against the formidable John Hancock and partner.
Windsor Nicholas and Trevor Lewis, Neil Thomas and Dennis Busby, and John Smith and Brian Norman also lost, and, at that stage, 4-1 down, Trefloyne faced a hammering.
Pride was restored as John Cliff and Clive John won 2 and 1. Then Peter Scourfield and Tom Fletcher won their game, as did John Bancroft and Phil 'two bellies' Jenkinson, the latter producing a dogged performance with his new navel hugging putter.
With the match tied at 4-4, all was set for a grandstand finish, but sadly from Trefloyne's viewpoint the last two games went Tenby's way with defeats for Ivan Kirk and Roger Thompson, and Pat Corcoran and John Rolfe.
Final result: Tenby 6 Trefloyne 4. Well done Tenby, and Trefloyne eagerly await the return on home ground in September.
John Rolfe was out in front again in the Tuesday stableford on July 2, winning with 32 points. Joint second, all on 31, were Con Kearney, Chris Thompson and Barry Thorne.
The Juniors have started their summer league, an 18-hole stableford competition over 12 weeks, with the best eight cards to count for each golfer. Ashley Evans submitted the best card in week one, scoring 43 points. James Maxwell with 37 was next best, followed by Tom Hilling with 36 and Luke Laidler with 35.
This weekend, members will be playing for the prestigious Trefloyne Challenge Cup, a 36-hole medal competition played over two days, Saturday and Sunday.
