A little piece of history was made on Saturday, May 4, when Trefloyne Golf Club played its first match in division three of the Dyfed League. It was an away fixture at Garnant Park, near Ammanford, and whilst the team enjoyed their inaugural match immensely, they learnt a lesson or two as well, coming out on the wrong side of a 5.5 - 1.5 defeat.
Chris Thompson and Carl French, Trefloyne's strongest pair, played superbly to win one up and Phil Catlin and Adam Thomas earned a well deserved half, but the remaining pairs found the Garnant Park course both long and testing.
Roger Thompson and Tom Hilling were five down after five and fearing they would only play 10 holes, rallied well to lose 5 and 4. Rob Evans and Simon Hilling lost 2 and 1, John Smith and Terry Morris lost 8 and 6 and the pairings of Roger Cryer and Alan Brown and George King and Nathan Lewis both lost 3 and 2.
Peter Scourfield's hole-in-one at the short 12th was the highlight of a low scoring Saturday stableford on April 27. Chris Hicks won with 33 points, Rob Evans was second with 31 and Peter Scourfield, thanks to a handy five points from the ace, was third with 29. The hole-in-one was allocated a double share of the twos kitty, with Ivan Kirk taking the balance for making the only two.
The Trefloyne 2002 Order of Merit is now underway. After four events (Winter League, JOP, April Medal and the Lombard) the leader is Meurig Evans with 16. Mel Neale is second with 14 and a group of four, Peter Edwards, Terry Whiston, Gary Haigh and Gerald John, share third with 10 each.
Tom Pollock was the Sunday Club winner on April 28. Mel Beeley won the Tuesday stableford on April 30 with 32 points. Barry Thorne was second with 30 and Paul Griffiths third with 29. Scoring improved on Thursday, May 2, when Mike Ansell returned to winning form with 38 points. Roger Cryer was second with 35 and Brian Norman third with 34.
Winners in the Carl French Electronics Junior Matchplay Trophy on Sunday, April 28, were Luke Laidler, Nathan Lewis, Adam Thomas, Ashley Evans, Allessandro Servini and Tom Hilling.
Today (Friday) sees the start of the busiest weekend in Trefloyne's calendar. The main feature is today's Charity Invitation Challenge, with Captain's Day following tomorrow and the inaugural Trefloyne Junior Open on Sunday.
