The Dormel Trophy has become a regular fixture at Trefloyne, and is always played on the first Saturday of the New Year. With Phil ('I don't drink New Year, as I'm behind the bar') Catlin having won the cup for the last two years, there was a possibility that sponsors Dorritt Parry and Mel Beeley would have to hand over their prized silverware for good, should Phil come up trumps again. Alas, disposing of the pub meant Phil could spend New Year on the same side of the bar as the rest, thus cancelling his usual advantage.

The worthy winner was Carl French with a very good 39 points, excellent off his meagre handicap. Gerald John was second with 38, and Barry Thorne third on countback, also with 38.

John Bancroft and Phil Jenkinson shared first place in the midweek stableford on Tuesday, January 8, each scoring 38 points. Roger Cryer, back on track after a three-week absence for festive refuelling, was third with 37.

Even on the temporary greens, in use thanks to a heavy frost, there was a large turnout of Seniors on January 10. Meurig Evans carded a fine 41 points to win, with Terry Whiston second on 38 and Bob Burks third with 37.

Trefloyne Juniors have embarked on a nine-hole winter foursomes league, for which pairs were drawn. Each pair will play eight stableford rounds, with the best six cards to count. These alternative shot events must test the patience of even the finest golfers which is perhaps why only the Junior Section, most of whom are fast becoming far better than the adult golfers, dare take on such a character building challenge.

First out of the blocks in round one on Sunday, January 6, were Leighton Gwyther and Luke Laidler with 23 points, closely followed by Simon Hilling and Daniel Brace with 22. In third place are Nathan Lewis and James Maxwell with 16.
