The seniors' away match at Haverfordwest took place on Thursday, August 16, and, with 23 turning up for 20 places, Graham Wharton had the luxury of selecting a team.
Having completed his executive responsibilities, the bearded one, who was determined to record a win against his old club, promptly paired up with Roger Thompson and won the opener 4 and 2.
This fine example failed to rub off on the rest of the Trefloyne team, although Neil Thomas and Tom Pollock were an exception, as they ran out 4 and 3 winners. John Cook and Chris Hicks also won well, 3 and 2, while Mel Beeley and Brian Cowley did enough to salvage a half in a close fought match.
Roger Cryer and Clive John, and also John Bancroft and Terry Whiston, went the full distance before losing exciting matches by one hole. Pat Corcoran and Tom Fletcher lost 3 and 2. Chic Brown and Peter Scourfield, whose matching lime green ensemble generated some admiring glances, went down 2 and 1, and there were heavy defeats for Barry Thorne and Brian Norman, 5 and 3, and Bob Burks and Dennis Busby, 7 and 5.
If Scourfield was the best dressed on the course, and it takes something special to outsmart Brian Cowley in the fancy dress stakes, then Busby outdid them all in the clubhouse afterwards, attired as he was in a fetching cream two-piece!
A very good day's golf, on one of the county's finest courses, which was presented in superb condition, was thoroughly enjoyed by winners and losers alike. Graham Wharton will have to wait another year to beat his old mates, as the result was a win for Haverfordwest by 6.5 - 3.5.
Gerald John has ousted Brian Cowley as the leader of the Trefloyne Order of Merit. After the August medal, John leads the table with 15 points, with Cowley second with 14 and Roger Cryer third with 12. Bill Pearce, Phil Jenkinson, Bobby Windsor and Mel Neale all have 10 points.
Roger Thompson won the stableford on Tuesday, August 14, scoring 37 points. Terry Whiston was second with 33, and Bob Burks third with 32.
Trefloyne Juniors experienced a wonderful outing when professional Steve Laidler accompanied 20 of them to the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor recently. They were fortunate in that they chose the Friday, when there was a full day's play. Tom Hilling's day was made when Ian Woosnam handed him one of his golf balls.
Sadly, the wet weather intervened over the weekend of August 11 and 12; the Saturday stableford was cancelled and on Sunday the Juniors lost the third round of their summer league.
The Hubbard Rabbits trophy and the Tiger Chalice have been rescheduled for tomorrow (Saturday).
