Gerald John returned the best net score in the August monthly medal, his 69 taking first place in the 16-24 handicap division, with Paul Griffiths two shots behind on net 71. Peter Scourfield was third with net 74.
For once the Rabbits handed in much the better score as, in the Tiger division, 0-16 handicaps, only Rob Evans produced a sub 80 round. He won with net 71, 10 clear of Phil Catlin on 81, with Mike Ansell third on countback over the back nine.
Phil Catlin, something of a specialist on the short holes, made yet another two, and Peter Edwards registered one as well.
The semi-final pairings in the four knockout cups are now known. In the Laidler singles, Carl French plays Chic Brown and Mike Ansell plays Meurig Evans. In the Wesley House singles, Barry Thorne has already reached the final, having won his semi against Barrie Turner, and will play either Darren Crockford or Allan Jones in the final.
In the Paddock Inn pairs, Alan Bale and Gary Haigh are rewarded for knocking out the winners for the last two years, Steve Laidler and Brian Cowley, with a semi-final against Mike Ansell and Ian Lawrence. Allan Gray and Ron Webber play Mel Beeley and Mel Neale for the other place in the final.
In the Bush House pairs, Alan Bale and Gary Haigh find themselves in another semi, this time against singles adversaries Chic Brown and Carl French. The winners will play Brian Cowley and Dave McMann or Mel Neale and Mel Beeley, the latter being another pair still in with a chance of a notable pairs 'double'.
Trefloyne Seniors entertained Newport (Pembs.) on Thursday, August 9, in the third of four matches in successive weeks. This proved to be an exciting contest, with 'Wharton's Warriors' triumphant by the narrow margin of 6-4.
In the top match, Graham Wharton and Roger Thompson led by example, winning 2 and 1, only for Mel Beeley, returning with all his charm and wit, and Brian Cowley to go down by the same score. Another defeat followed, this time for John Cliff and Clive John, before Neil Thomas and Tom Pollock levelled the match with a win for the hosts.
Pat Corcoran and Terry Whiston also won, but defeats for Peter Scourfield and Tom Fletcher, and Dennis Busby and John Bancroft, the latter pair going down by one hole in a thriller, left the match score all-square again.
Fortunately for Trefloyne, the last two pairs won comfortably, with Phil Jenkinson and Brian Norman coming in 5 and 4, and Bob Burks and Roger Cryer posting a 5 and 3 win.
Trefloyne Juniors played the second round of their summer league on Sunday, August 5, and there was some excellent scoring by a large number of the boys, with no fewer than eight of them returning with 36 points or better. Top dogs were Andrew Birch, Dan Edwards and Ben Edwards with 39 each. Daniel Brace scored 37 and Matthew Birch, Luke Laidler, James Maxwell and David Warren all scored 36 each.
