One of Trefloyne's rare mixed pairs competitions, the Whitewell Cup, was held on Sunday, July 8. With the players taking alternate shots, there is plenty of scope for stress in this format. All was calm in the Shooter team, however, as Dave and Sue scored a resounding victory, their 36 points eclipsing the rest of the field. This capped a fine weekend for Dave as the previous day he had won the rabbits division of the July monthly medal.

The first three pairs in the Whitewell Cup were all married couples, as following the Shooters were Tom and Pat Fletcher with 26, and Barry and Heather Thorne with 25.

Three cheers this week for a couple of winners who don't usually give this column, or the handicap secretary for that matter, too much bother.

Pat Corcoran put in a rare, but very welcome, winning performance in the Tuesday stableford on July 10, his 33 points just pipping Roger Thompson's 32. With 20 points on the back nine, the club captain had left his charge just a little late. Roger Cryer was third.

Danny Butler is another who tends to keep his best golf to himself. The Sunday roll-up is not usually reported in this column, probably because the participants are either too shy or too inebriated to leave a result for the press officer.

However, Danny won the most recent encounter fair and square with a startling 39 points, and will have enjoyed his well earned handicap reduction.

Both knockout pairs cups have reached the quarter-final stage, for which the matches are as follows:

Bush House Pairs Cup: A. Baile and G. Haigh v M. Evans and N. Owens, the winner playing C. French and A. Brown, who are already through to the semi-final; M. Ansell and I. Lawrence v B. Cowley and D. McMann; M. Beeley and M. Neale v J. Bancroft and G. King.

Paddock Inn Pairs: M. Ansell and I. Lawrence v W. Nicholas and B. Hughes; S. Laidler and B. Cowley v A. Baile and G. Haigh; M. Beeley and M. Neale v D. Crockford and A. McGrath; A. Gray and R. Webber v N. Thomas and A. Jones.

These quarter-finals must be played by August 5.

Chic Brown is the first to reserve his semi-final place in the Laidler Singles Cup, having beaten Gary Haigh in the quarter-final. In the Wesley House singles, Allan Jones has beaten Ian Lawrence in their quarter-final match.

Absent from Trefloyne for a while has been Mel Beeley, who is recovering after a short spell in hospital. Best wishes from all the club, old timer, and whilst it's remarkably peaceful without you, we'd rather have you back!
