Trefloyne Seniors turned out in force for their 'blue riband', the Windsor Nicholas Seniors Cup, on Thursday, June 14. The old timer, Mel Beeley, playing with new equipment, wore the broadest of smiles after handing in a card with 41 stableford points which put him way out on his own in first place. His playing partner, Brian Cowley, reported that Mel's golf was "out of this world," and, just to show there were no hard feelings, promptly cut his old friend's handicap. This takes Mel, now off 14, well and truly into the tiger division.
Peter Ryan posted 36 points to take second, whilst the sponsor, Windsor Nicholas, was third on 34. Bill Pearce with 33 was fourth and last year's winner, Roger Cryer, fifth with 32. Brian Cowley, who was sixth with the same score, made the only two of the day.
The Seniors' next match is away to Tenby on Thursday, July 5. Those wishing to play should add their names to the list in the Pro's shop.
The Tuesday stableford on June 5 was won by Meurig Evans with 33 points. Con Kearney was second with 32 and Peter Scourfield third with 28. Windsor Nicholas won the contest on June 12 with 32 points. Gilroy Thomas and Meurig Evans shared second with 31 points each.
The early rounds of the four knockout cups have been progressing quietly through the months of May and June, but those who have not yet completed the first round of the Bush House Pairs or Paddock Inn Pairs should note that these matches must be played by July 1.
The Wesley House singles is the first competition to reach the quarter-final stage, for which the line-up is Alan Gray v Barrie Turner; Mel Neale v Barry Thorne; Darren Crockford v Mel Beeley or Neil Thomas; Ian Lawrence v Allan Jones. None of last year's semi-finalists have made the last eight. These quarter-finals must be completed by July 22.
Trefloyne Juniors have been cutting a dash on the fairways in recent weeks, as they are now sporting smart blue polo shirts, generously sponsored by Rowston Holiday Park, New Hedges.
On Sunday, June 10, the Juniors played their monthly medal, as usual in two divisions. The 0-28 handicap division was won by Luke Laidler with net 70, one shot clear of James Maxwell who was second on 71. Nathan Lewis was third with net 77. The 29 and over division was won by David Warren with an excellent net 67. Richard Thomas was second with net 77, and Ben Edwards third with net 78.
