Hardworking captains Roger Thompson and Dorritt Parry were rewarded with a magnificent turnout of members and guests for the annual Captain's Day held at Trefloyne on Saturday, May 5. The sun shone, the course was in splendid condition, and everyone was in jovial mood after the success of the previous day's Invitation Challenge.
There was plenty of good golf played, not least by the opening group which included men's captain Roger Thompson. He was partnered by his son, Chris, who had travelled from Germany for the weekend, and plays off two. The group was completed by guest Ian Duffy, so, with partners like that, the captain had ample opportunity to improve his game!
It was with particular pride, therefore, that Roger was later able to present son Chris with the prize for the best gross score of the day, a fine 74.
Another guest who was on top of his game was Observer editor Neil Dickinson who scored 40 points to win the men's stableford. He just pipped Tom Pollock who finished with 39.
Sue Shooter ensured at least one prize was won by a Trefloyne golfer, winning the ladies' stableford with 38. Runner-up was Glenda Pearce with 34.
Trefloyne Juniors entered into the spirit of the day, holding their own Captain's Day competition. Adam Thomas won the 0-28 division with 40 points, while Daniel Brace fairly romped home in the 29 and upwards division, scoring a fabulous 49 points.
With the golf completed, the players enjoyed a splendid buffet before the two captains' performed an accomplished double act, as they shared the microphone and thanked friends, family, members and guests for their support.
Dorritt presented Liz Crockford, the ladies' vice-captain, and the numerous lady helpers, with flower arrangements, and extended thanks also to Steve and Haulwen Laidler for their help.
Peter Edwards and his team were again thanked for presenting the course in such immaculate condition.

Trefloyne Seniors visited Newport, Pembs., on May 10. Chic Brown's team lost an enjoyable match 6.5-3.5, with several games going right to the wire. Roger Cryer and David Owen won a thriller, while the other two winning pairs were Graham Wharton and John Smith, and Mel Beeley and Brian Cowley, the latter storming home 6 and 5. Alas, the other pairs all went down, other than Neil Thomas and Tom Pollock, who salvaged a half.
