Well over 100 golfers converged on Trefloyne for the annual Invitation Charity Challenge on Friday, May 4. This year's event, blessed with superb weather, was a fund-raiser for the fight against Alzheimer's Disease. Local businesses generously rallied round, not only entering teams of three, but also sponsoring individual holes and offering special prizes.
After a splendid day's golf, the players gathered for a sumptuous buffet and enjoyed an amusing talk, full of delicious golfing anecdotes, by the well-known local raconteur, Mr. Arthur Ormond, who later presented the prizes.
Trefloyne men's captain, Roger Thompson, and his lady equivalent, Dorritt Parry, had, with their committee and squad of helpers, worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event. Roger thanked all participants and sponsors for their support, and extended special thanks to Peter Edwards and his team of greenkeepers for presenting the course in perfect condition, and also to competition director/club secretary, Brian Cowley, who had administered the event with his customary meticulous efficiency.
The golf was of a high standard and there was the closest possible finish to the Men's 'blue riband', the Trefloyne Invitation Challenge Cup. Neil Thomas won with 40 points, beating Allan Jones on countback. The Ladies Salver was won by Tessa Bishop with 32.
Neil Thomas crowned the day by sharing in the team prize, the Trefloyne Challenge Shield, which was won by 'The Lydstep Boys'.
Tenby's Gavin Scotcher took the men's best gross prize, with Barbara Shaw winning the ladies' prize. Peter Bowling hit the shot of the day to win the nearest the pin, just 3.25 inches away from the hole (nearly a very expensive ace, Peter, with over 100 drinks to buy!).
