On Saturday, the juniors of Saundersfoot Bowling Club turned up at the green at 9.45 am to take part in the girls' singles, boys' singles and the pairs competitions. The day started cloudy, but soon the skies were bright blue, the sun shone and the talent of the youngsters matched the weather. In the semi-finals of the girls' singles, after two very tight matches, Gemma Amos and Kate Williams came out victorious over Fiona Webb and Megan Williams. In the final, Kate Williams put up a strong fight against the experienced Gemma Amos. Kate was six down after three ends, but fought back strongly. Gemma finally won 7-4. In the boys' singles, the experienced pair of Joe Dennis and Mathew Dick met in the final. After a hard-fought game, Matthew Dick came out the winner 7-4. It was now time for the pairs, with partners being chosen 'out of the hat!' In the semi-finals, Jodie Copestake and Joe Dennis came up against Gemma Amos and Matthew Dick. With only one end to go, Jodie and Joe were winning 3-2 against the two singles winners! Jodie was unfazed by the challenge and with her third bowl drove the jack into the ditch. Her bowl finished within a foot of it! The spectators and Joe went wild, while Jodie just smiled! The final score was 5 -3 to Jodie and Joe. In the other very exciting semi-final, an extra end had to be played, with Fiona Webb and Lauren Williams coming out winners over Hattie Atwell and Kate Williams, 4-3. In the final, Jodie once again drove the jack into the ditch, not once, but twice during the game. Both times her bowl finished within a yard of the jack. It was a great game, with Joe and Jodie being the eventual winners, 4-2. The final bowl of the tournament has to be mentioned. Joe and Jodie were holding two, but Lauren bowled and, with amazing precision, her wood finished on the edge of the ditch by the jack! Badges to all competitors, trophies to the winners of the three competitions and the trophy for most improved player - Jodie Copestake - were presented by tSaundersfoot Bowling Club president, John Evans. All agreed it had been a marvellous day. However, there are a few observations to be made of all the competitors: they bowled an average of 90 bowls each; their talent was outstanding; their sportsmanship was excellent; their behaviour and politeness was exceptional. They are a credit to their parents and school.
