A Tenby youngster has been praised after playing his part in a clean-up of the harbour this month following a night of anti-social behaviour which left large shards of broken glass on the beach sands.
Following reports of around 300 people gathering in the harbour at one point on Saturday, April 17, which left an inordinate amount of rubbish in the vicinity, a clean-up led by the harbourmaster, Pembrokeshire County Council staff, contractors Danfo and local volunteers ensued first thing on Sunday morning, as many feared that families heading to the beach for the day to enjoy the sunny weather would have put their young children at risk with the amount of broken glass left in the harbour and on the beach.
Seven-year-old Samuel Fecci also stepped forward to offer his assistance, after seeing in the media the scene that had been left.
“On seeing the pictures of the harbour area my heart was crying,” said Sam.
“I wanted to clean the beach because of the broken glass and cigarette butts, as it was not safe to play on. I don’t have a garden so use the harbour as my playground
“After raking some of the beach some small children were playing where we had just found some glass and I was happy as I helped make it safe and tidy for them.
“My mummy and daddy got married in that church (St Julian’s by the harbour) and it is really not nice to spoil that area.
“We should all look after our environment, bring a bag with you and take your rubbish home please, leave only foot prints!” he added.
On Monday, the Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Sam Skyrme-Blackhall presented young Samuel with a ‘Certificate of recognition’ for his good deed, on behalf of the town council.
“His mother Sallyanne, said when Sam saw the pictures on Sunday morning of what had happened, he was very upset - as harbour beach is for him, as for many his playground, she said.
“Myself and my fellow councillors wanted to recognise Sam’s efforts, as he is an example to everybody and Tenby should rightly be proud of him and others who helped to clean up.
“In many ways Sam was excepting the thanks of the town on behalf of PCC, Danfo, the Harbourmaster and assistant and local residents.
“I would like to reiterate my thanks to everyone. They, like Sam, are an example to us all,” she added.
*Tenby harbourmaster Chris Salisbury was due to join the Mayor to congratulate Sam, but as the photograph was about to be taken he had to respond to a shout on the lifeboat.
