If you're holidaying in Wales this year you needn't panic if you forget to pack your holiday reading. For visitors to Pembrokeshire and vounty residents holidaying elsewhere in Wales will be able to borrow the latest summer bestseller or travel guide from a library - even though they may be miles from home. With close to a million people in Wales borrowing books every year, holidaymakers across the country will be able to use a library at their holiday resort, as long as they have a membership card from their local library at home. This could prove particularly useful for visiting holidaymakers as libraries have a wide range of destination guides on offer. Those who are organised enough to visit their local library before leaving for holidays abroad can save money by borrowing phrase books and language tapes. With the disappointing weather this summer, library staff are hoping to attract more people than ever to use the wide range of services on offer. The 323 public libraries across Wales will be running a series of events for children and adults alike, including summer reading challenges, where thousands of children will be inspired to read throughout the summer holidays. Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for cultural services said the initiative had been designed with library users in mind, giving them access to books both at home and on holiday. "There are all sorts of fun activities going on in our libraries this summer and with the weather being so changeable, we are hoping that many people will take advantage of this service," he said. It is estimated that 1.6 million books are borrowed during the summer holidays in Welsh libraries.
