Pembrokeshire's young swimmers made quite a splash at a recent swim championship.

County swimmers won almost 130 medals at the British Gas Swim Wales West Wales Regional Championship earlier this month.

Of the 129 individual medals, 49 were gold, 42 silver and 38 bronze.

Eight swimmers - Ross Sutton, Hannah Saunders, Carys Thomas, Dan Thomas, Sam Lewis, Isabelle Davies, Hazel Fox and Bethan Davie - recorded 22 individual meet records between them.

Carys Thomas also completed her full complement of national qualifying times.

Meanwhile, Pembroke set two meet records with their relay teams in the Boys 13 and Under medley and freestyle races, while Tenby set a meet record in the Girls 9-10 years freestyle relay.

Paul Dowey Pembrokeshire County Council's swimming development coach, said the young swimmers had done extremely well.

"Their success is down to their hard-work and effort as well as all the input of the coaches and volunteers who keep our swim clubs afloat," he said.

It was only the second time in more than 40 years that the gala - one of the biggest swim events ever to be held in the county - has been held in Pembrokeshire, and follows last year's successful championships.

Held over the weekends of February 5 and 6 and 12 and 13, the gala attracted over 250 swimmers from across West Wales with the Pembrokeshire teams of Haverfordwest Seals, Pembroke and District, Tenby Dolphins, Fishguard Flyers and Milford Haven Tigers well represented.

A partnership between Swim Wales, Pembrokeshire County Swimming and Pembrokeshire Leisure was instrumental in first bringing the prestigious event to the county last year.

That was made possible thanks to the new Haverfordwest Leisure Centre's eight-lane 25m pool with electronic timing, video scoreboard and spectator gallery for over 300 people.

Organised by the South West Wales regional panel of Swim Wales, similar events were held in North Wales and South East Wales.
