Commonwealth Games champion and Olympic and World bronze medallist David Davies has announced the launch of the Welsh Amateur Swimming Association (WASA)/Kellogg's Swim Active Wales programme; which aims, over three- years, to encourage around 7,500 non-swimming children and adults in Wales to take up swimming as a form of regular activity. Cereal giant Kellogg's is investing £30k annually in funding Swim Active Wales over the next three years (total £90k investment). In addition, Sportsmatch Cymru - the Welsh Assembly Government's business incentive scheme for sport in Wales - has agreed to match Kellogg's year one investment of £30k.  The programme includes a number of regional projects including the Swimfest South West Wales project taking place at Pembroke Pool. This involves recruiting, training and developing young people as coaches, officials and events organisers. Their role will be to act as coaches to the children in local primary schools and plan and develop the Swimfest. The aim is to offer additional lessons to extend and enhance the skills learnt during Key Stage 2 school swimming and teach new skills.  Run in partnership with WASA, the Swim Active Wales programme has been tailored to complement the Welsh Assembly Government's existing £5m Free Swimming initiative and will also help in achieving the government's physical activity targets as set out in its 'Climbing Higher' strategy.
