HAVERFORDWEST 7

A display of controlled 15-man rugby swept aside an under-strength Haverfordwest outfit. Captain Adam Ball kept making inroads through the home defence and as he got caught up, so Jon Walker, Adam Hughes and Dan Colley wiped out the defence to give Tom Groves at scrum-half tons of quality ball.

Steve Handicott made the most of everything that came his way, often throwing huge mispasses that the homesters struggled to contend with. Barry John was unlucky not to score on several occasions with his dynamic running on the wing, Lloyd Wilson had a sound game at centre, making tries as well as picking up five points himself.

The power of Lawrence Davies saw him claim a try, Ben Field-Thomas scored a classic and Adam Ball and Dan Colley both picked up a hat-trick of tries. The forwards were immense and showed how well drilled they have become in every department.

Nick Druid made his debut for Tenby and showed how important his inclusion will be this season. Duncan Meacher, James Davies and Richard May all displayed their rugby skills, and Stephan Paxton put in a good show on the wing.

The 14s should do well this season and if this performance is anything to go by, they'll be up there with the pick of Pembrokeshire.

HAVERFORDWEST U12s v TENBY U12s

Everyone involved at this level knew that this game would be a baptism of fire for the Tenby outfit. Moving up to the 15-man game was always going to be a big step for these youngsters and the Haverfordwest side, with a host of county conscripts, were a well drilled unit.

Tenby 12s had several team members that had not played the game before, but already there is a positive feeling about the squad in the way that they continually battled against the odds. There were fine debuts from David Denton at tight head prop, Ben Griffiths in the centre, Scott Helmich at wing forward and Ryan Lewis on the wing.

The main play-makers, Rob Colley in the pack and Guto Griffiths in the backs, found themselves constantly on the back foot, but inspired their team and kept their heads up.

Simon Stanford, Jamie Robins and Sam Baker stood firm at the back and tackled their hearts out. Sam Christopher has soon found his feet at scrum-half and contributed with some fine breaks from the base of the scrum.

Luke Dedman and Liam Watkins fought tooth and nail for every scrap of ball, Joe Lewis and number eight Henry Boot never gave an inch. Mathew Watkins had his usual powerful game in the thick of it all.

It may have been one-way traffic, but by Christmas these lads will be a force to be reckoned with. 'Watch this space'.

TENBY U11s 33 HAVERFORDWEST 0

Last year's heroes began their campaign in fine style with a sparkling seven-try to nil count against a competitive Haverfordwest outfit.

Under a glorious Indian summer sky, the Tenby boys warmed to their task and continued where they left off last season with a winning formula.

After a minute's silence for those lost in the American atrocity, the first game of the season kicked off in lively fashion.

With Tenby playing down the slope first half, it was clear to all that the Swifts were raring to go after the long summer recess. The pack tore into their opponents like ball hungry wolves, with front rowers Joseff Morris Yannick Parker and Jack Baker ripping the ball from mauls and making ground. Patrick Roberts and Oliver Goldwait took the Lion's share of lineout ball and flattened the opposition with their aggressive tackling.

Half-backs Kiefer Thomson and Jamie Williams had plenty of ball at their disposal and used it wisely, sometimes taking on their opponents and sometimes setting their threequarter line moving. Matthew Davies was an incisive runner from fullback and Toby Smith, James Criddle and James Canton proved elusive in the middle of the park.

Daniel McDermot came on in the first half with immediate impact making a storming touchline run, only to be denied a try at the corner flag. Unfortunately Danny suffered a broken wrist and will be out of action for a few weeks. Get well soon Dan, we look forward to having you back in action.

Despite Tenby's superiority in both possession and territory, tries did not come quickly against a determined defence. The deadlock was broken by a James Criddle try following an exciting handling move, with forwards and backs combining well. Kiefer Thomson followed this with a lightning blind-side break from the scrum for an individual try just before half-time.

After the break, when the cob-webs had well and truly been blown away, Tenby cut loose. Forwards and backs all showed fine handling skills and kept the ball alive and moving and were quickly camped on the Haverfordwest line.

The pressure told and the next try came with Jamie Williams crashing over for the touchdown in a tight situation.

Toby Smith followed with a pair of tries, capitalising on his balanced running and deceptive pace.

With the match in the bag, the coaches had the luxury of being able to make substitutions to give everybody a game, so Joe Kidney was introduced for his first outing and he showed that he had lost none of his pace in attack. It is hoped he can appear on a regular basis when his soccer commitments allow.

James Criddle was moved up to scrum-half and immediately made a scintillating run to score a fine try, beating at least five opponents.

Thomas Griffin also came on to make his debut and he will benefit from the experience.

The scoring was completed when Patrick Roberts sent out a long pass to wing James Canton who dashed over in the corner.

In all it was a pleasing start to the season which promises to be a long campaign. Let us hope the boys stay fit and healthy throughout and most of all enjoy their rugby.

Finally, congratulations are extended to Matthew Davies, Kiefer Thomson and Patrick Roberts who have made it into the county squad.

HAVERFORDWEST U10s v TENBY U10s

Tenby travelled to Haverfordwest on a glorious sunny Sunday to test their skills in the season's opener. And what an opener it was. It was obvious from the first whistle that the name of the game was full contact. Tackling for defensive supremacy was the key in which both teams showed top class commitment.

Daniel Gosnold, Henry Lawrence and Lewis Davies all charged like warriors on crash ball runs, quickly supported by Andrew Cooke, Lucia Fecci, Alex Thomas and the ever-present Denny Paxton.

Tenby scrum-half Ianto Griffiths had an excellent service which gave his outside-half Lloyd Thomas acres of space and time to exploit his skills which provided the crowd with exciting rugby to watch.

Hard man Lewis Hodgson and Michael Robins marshalled the centre field, letting no one in a Haverfordwest jersey through. The pressure from the home team increased and eventually a superb individual run broke the deadlock, making it one try to nil, which was converted successfully.

At half-time, the Seasiders had a major reshuffle to allow everyone of the 16-strong squad a chance of a run out. What an impact they made. Tenby began the second-half in a dangerous defensive position, which saw monster tackles from all the black and reds, and even a five-metre scrum was conceded.

However, it was from this scrum that Daniel Thomas produced a bone-shaking tackle which made the ball spill for Joseph Richards, the stinger winger, to steal and fly down the best part of the park before he was excellently tackled. Somehow he managed to get his pass in, which gave Sam Ormond space to attack, which he did bravely and set off Lloyd Thomas to score a superb team effort try, which was elegantly converted by Ianto Griffiths.

Tenby now turned the screw with probing runs from Tom Baker and Lewis Canton, but even though it seemed a try was on the cards, the home side defended heroically which resulted in the game ending as a draw. A fair result for both sides, who put in so much commitment and effort, which gave the large crowd so much to cheer and applaud.

You did the coaches proud, your team-mates proud and, most of all, you did yourselves proud. Well done, keep it up!

HAVERFORDWEST U9s 9 TENBY VIKINGS 6

After a well earned summer break and just two weeks of training, the Vikings travelled to Haverfordwest.

On a hot and sunny Sunday morning, their enthusiasm was still as high as last season and the boys settled well, showing how quickly they had adapted to their new tackling game.

Leading by example, Robert F. showed some excellent play and with superb support from Philip, Curtis and new recruits Joe and Henri, Tenby scored an early try.

Haverfordwest responded quickly and scored twice, despite the excellent efforts by Loui, Dylan, Jimmy and Hugh.

Tenby didn't give up and their hard work paid off when Daniel equalised before the break.

Both teams played some great rugby in the second half and some brave and strong tackling from Rob L., Luke and Sam stopped Haverfordwest.

Tenby were rewarded with a try when Curtis finally broke free, but it was the quick restart from Haverfordwest that found Tenby off their guard, and their winger sprinted to a great solo try.

The Vikings kept battling in the sunshine and did find gaps in the well organised Haverfordwest defence and scored some good tries, Rob Fairlie scoring fout in total.

Haverfordwest scored a few more, but it was an excellent first game of the season and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who travelled to support the boys.

Tenby Vikings: Philip Horsley, Henry Pritchard, Joe Davies, Rob Luly, Loui Evans, Luke James, Robert Fairlie, Dylan Griffin, Jimmy James, Hugh Thomas, Curtis Hurlow, Sam Turton, Daniel Robbins.
