A Narberth man who smashed a beer glass in another man's face has escaped an immediate jail sentence.

A CCTV camera inside the Dragon Inn, Narberth, filmed Oliver George Torkington, 22, as he suddenly lunged at Simon Evans, hitting him with the glass, thumping him in the face and biting him on the arm.

Torkington was pulled off by others in the pub. But, said Gerald Neave, prosecuting at Swansea Crown Court, even then Torkington struggled to continue with the attack.

Mr. Neave said there had been 'bad blood' between the two men, who bumped into each other on September 8, 2006.

Inside the Dragon Inn, Torkington asked Mr. Evans outside for a fight, but Mr. Evans could be seen in the film putting up both hands in a gesture of peace.

Torkington could be seen attacking Mr. Evans in what the judge described as an 'unprovoked assault carried out with ferocity'.

Mr. Evans needed hospital treatment for cuts to his face, bruising and a bite mark.

In a victim impact statement, Mr. Evans said he thought Torkington needed psychiatric help. Torkington, of Beachwood Place, Narberth, admitted unlawful wounding.

His barrister, Ruth Smith, said Torkington had paid for counselling sessions in a bid to 'deal with some issues.'

"He lost his temper on that night. Thankfully, the injuries to Mr. Evans were not as serious as they could have been," she added.

Torkington, she said, had tried to change his lie by moving to Whitland and taking a job in tele sales. The judge, Mr. Recorder Peter Heywood, said only a jail sentence was appropriate, but it did not have to be immediate.

Torkington was jailed for nine months, the sentence suspended for 18 months, and ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work for the community.

He was also ordered to pay £250 in prosecution costs.
