Fresh from their surprise 2-0 win against Carew AFC last week, Saundersfoot Sports again pulled out all stops on Saturday, when Llanelli based team Trostre visited the King George VI Playing Fields to compete in the fourth round of the West Wales Cup.

Saundersfoot and Hakin are the only Pembrokeshire teams left in the competition. Saundersfoot had already had a good run in the cup, but the favourites for this match were the visiting team, Trostre.

With the pitch just about playable, conditions underfoot were difficult and, as it proved, this was to suit Saundersfoot.

With Trostre playing towards the Pavilion in the first half, their game featured quick passing and running into space. Saundersfoot found it hard to cope, but with the experience of Peter Rattenbury, Paul Thomas and Simon Cole, they held Trostre back from scoring. Young sweeper Jason Llama also came into his own, holding the visiting forward line at bay.

Darren Unamee was in excellent form, scoring two well deserved goals during the first half. The first came from the left side of midfield when, with two opponents around him and his back to the wall, he managed to chip the 'keeper from 20 yards.

Russell Evans, Robert Jones and Steve Ruff all had outstanding games, dominating the centre of midfield, and this led to Darren scoring the second goal from five yards, bringing with it a roar from the Saundersfoot supporters on the sidelines.

Goalkeeper Craig Reardon was proving to be frustrating to the Trostre attack as he thwarted their attempts to score with many talented saves, but it was a 50-50 challenge just before half-time which resulted in him having to leave the field through injury.

This position was filled by centre half Peter Rattenbury, who changed into the 'keeper's shirt, and Simon Brace came off the sidelines into defence and immediately dominated the goal with his usual style.

The whistle was blown and Saundersfoot team manager Phil Jones and assistant manager John Watkins gave a few words of wisdom to the boys.

The second half started with Trostre scoring early and then following up with two missed penalties. Rattenbury held his own in goal, doing a tremendous job for the team.

However, the pace and ability of Jason Bridges and Mike Beynon up front saw two more goals for Saundersfoot Sports, both coming from Trostre's push forward and Saundersfoot catching them on the break.

Trostre managed to score a second goal, leaving the final score 4-2 to Saundersfoot.

A huge cheer went up at the final whistle. This was a great performance by Saundersfoot and takes them into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Manager Phil Jones was delighted with his team's performance, which shows that the hard work is starting to pay off.

Subs: James Thomas and Andrew Spencer.
