Sir,

Once again, Tenby councillors are considering the future of the De Valence Pavilion. One has to ask the question "What are they trying to achieve?" Tenby should be viewed as a 'jewel in the crown' for tourism in Pembrokeshire.

A facility such as the De Valence is essential, not only for the benefit of tourists, but also for the use of the wider community. Visitors comment on the beauty of Pembrokeshire and its beaches. Tenby is regarded as quaint, with superb beaches and a selection of public houses and restaurants.

However, what Tenby lacks is a well-supported theatre, cinema, arts and conference centre. This, with proper funding and support, the De Valance could and should provide. The present management, with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers, are gradually making a success of the venue, but need the support of Tenby council.

From a recent article in the Tenby Observer, dated October 23, the council does not have a good record when attempting to manage the De Valance itself. As a result, it is essential that the council should allow the Trust to continue its running of the De Valance.

Surely, it is only common sense that Pembrokeshire County Council, Pembrokeshire National Park and Tenby council should co-ordinate their decisions to support a vital amenity, such as the De Valence, both for tourism and Pembrokeshire.

T. M. Williams,

Jameston,

Tenby.
