A planning application for a single wind turbine close to the Texaco oil refinery at Pembroke has won the support of a local environmental organisation.
Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth has written to the planning department at Pembrokeshire County Council urging them to approve the application which has been submitted by Mr. T. Kenniford, of Hoplass Farm, Rhoscrowther, near Pembroke.
Energy campaigner for the group, Gordon James, stated: "We believe that this application is on an excellent site as the landscape has already been industrialised by the Texaco oil refinery.
"Scientific evidence is showing that the problem of climate change, which is caused mainly by the burning of coal, oil and gas, is considerably worse than previously considered. Extremes of weather are becoming more severe and are happening more often. Cleaner forms of energy are going to have to be implemented rapidly if catastrophe is to be avoided.
"This wind turbine would make a valuable contribution to raising the disappointingly low level of renewable energy in Pembrokeshire and help to demonstrate that, as a county, we are beginning to respond to the challenge posed by climate change." In their letter to the county council, the group points out that wind energy is strongly supported by both the UK and the Welsh Assembly governments and that this application complies with government policy.
