Sir, I was delighted to see in the Observer dated August 6, two letters in support of the proposed shopping development at New Hedges. I am in complete agreement with Mr. Griffiths and Mr. Briers and believe the majority of the local population would be also. Perhaps we should start a campaign fund in support of the development. Count me in! Two points which neither gentlemen mentioned. Firstly; Tenby and Saundersfoot are holiday resorts, and therefore cater for the thousands of holidaymakers who come here regularly. Approximately 80 percent of the businesses are visitor friendly; hotels, pubs, restaurants, gift shops etc., and many of these close in the winter months. Those of us who are here for 12 months of the year have very little choice of shops. Tenby has one supermarket, three butchers, three grocers, two greengrocers and two chemists. Saundersfoot has one supermarket, one butcher, one grocer, and one greengrocer who closes during the winter months. Secondly; if you are disabled, parking at any time of the year is difficult, but in July and August you just do not go to Tenby or Saundersfoot, but head for Pembroke Dock, Haverfordwest or Carmarthen, where at least you can park your car and get around more easily and safely. I am blaming no one, it is just that neither Tenby nor Saundersfoot were designed to take cars at all, let alone the numbers using them now. The popularity of the Londis store at New Hedges, the Farm Shop on the A478 and the Co-op at Kilgetty prove my point.
