Sunday, August 20, saw the seventh running of the Whitland Under 15 Bowls Tournament, sponsored by Roy Croft, formerly of Whitland but now living in the Cotswolds. This is now one of the eagerly looked forward to events in the junior calendar. This year saw 23 juniors taking part, coming from as far as Ammanford, Cardigan and Pembrokeshire clubs. Played on a round robin format, for the opening rounds, this is a two-wood singles event, over five ends. The opening rounds showed that the juniors of Wales have got the talent to ensure the future of the game. With the top player in each section going through to the quarter-final stages, competition was fierce, and organiser Steve Reese had to be on form trying to work out the various permutations of shot difference etc. The semi-finals saw young Billy Lewis, of Milford Haven, against Thomas Holmes, of Carmarthen. This was a tight tussle, with Thomas, in his first year on the outdoor circuit, coming out on top. Next door, Joe Richards, of Tenby, was up against Sion Jones, of Cardigan, in a thrilling game. Sion took a four-shot lead, only for Joe to fight back and take the game to an extra end, with Joe winning the tie-break. The final was watched by a large crowd, who were very appreciative of the skills on show, Joe Richards pulling out all the stops, and playing some terrific shots to have the game tied up after just seven ends. Prior to the presentation of the cup and the winners' cheques, organiser Steve Reese thanked the kitchen staff, who had supplied the now obligatory bacon butties and the lunch eagerly devoured by the hungry youngsters, the bar staff, markers and club coaches for their efforts. Roy Croft, who had driven from his home in the Cotswolds for the occasion, did the honours, presenting the cheques to the runners-up and the winner's cup and cheque to Joe Richards. Once again it had been a brilliant day, with some superb skills on display. The Whitland club would like to thank everyone who helped make it such a success, especially the sponsor, Roy Croft, for his continued and unfailing support.
