Rossini is famous for his wonderful operas which have entranced music lovers for many generations. Late in his life, and more than 30 years after writing his final opera, he wrote what can only be described as a stunning work in a religious setting: his Petite Messe Solennelle.
The mass is certainly not petite at a length of 90 minutes, and, with its memorable tunes, catchy rhythms and boundless energy seems diametrically opposed to the ‘solemn’ description of the title. Yet, here we have a work written by a man who proclaims his faith in his own unique way, delighting and beguiling both audiences and performers.
The work will be sung by the Côr Dyfed Choir at a concert in St. Davids Cathedral on Saturday, July 16, at 7.30. The choir will be conducted by Oliver Waterer and accompanied by Simon Pearce and Samuel Howley. Soloists are Tanya Hurst (soprano), Adriana Festeu (mezzo soprano), Robyn Lyn Evans (tenor) and Louis Hurst (bass).
Tickets: centre nave £18, rear nave £14, side aisles £10 unreserved (under 16 free in side aisles) available from St. Davids Bookshop, Victoria Bookshop, Haverfordwest, Seaways Bookshop, Fishguard, or ’phone 01834 842 291.
