More than 30 artists will exhibit their oil, watercolour and acrylic paintings alongside printmakers’ linocut, etched and engraved images in Tenby during August at the White Lion Street Gallery.

Subjects range from traditional ‘seaside’ images of people enjoying the beaches with boats on sunlit seas from Dai David, to the bright houses of Audrey Johns’s harbours and Amroth and Saundersfoot in oils by Tina Lewis. The large ‘letterbox’ shape of Lyndon Thomas encloses quiet paintings of rural landscapes and the iconic harbour of Porthgain.

The countryside is represented by Elizabeth Haines, Damian Dowling and Thomas Haskett’s Preseli hill farms, fields and lanes. Ann Lewis has incised lino of South Pembrokeshire beaches and streams and Jenny Nolan shows soft flowing watercolours of the river Cleddau. The interior of a barn, a flooded field and Wyndham Colliery by Peter Cronin demonstrate this most difficult of mediums.

Print-maker Alan Williams and Judith Stroud show monoprints of pottery, a beautiful depiction of the succulent ‘Echeveria’ and an extremely high tide in Tenby that has Prince Albert jumping off his plinth. Andie Clay’s subtle abstract work in limited palette contrasts with Margaret Welsh’s colourful Koi carp and young Faye McLaughlin’s airborne balloon. Bert Evans’s amusing and clever collage has now become a historical record of South Parade before ‘they’ cut down all the horse-chestnut trees a month ago.

Despite the vagaries of August weather, summer visitors to the show are sure of a warm welcome to see original works of skill, imagination and observation in equal parts. In other parts of the gallery is a further large collection of paintings and original prints, ceramic and glass by more than 60 regular artists and makers.

The summer exhibition is open from Tuesday, August 1, until Monday, August 28. The gallery is open from 10-5 every day, except for Wednesday. Email for further information [email protected] or view everything on the gallery website www.artmatters.org.uk
